Social Emotional Learning

Helping Children Develop Emotional Intelligence

At P.S. 145, we believe in a holistic approach, which focuses on the needs of the whole child. One of the ways we achieve this is through Social Emotional Learning. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for being a healthy adult. This includes problem-solving skills and intergender communication and understanding, as well as teaching kids to embrace diversity and build healthy relationships that will last well into adulthood. At P.S. 145, we use the Sanford Harmony curriculum, a SEL program designed to foster intergender communication and understanding, connection, and community both in and outside the classroom and develop students into compassionate and caring adults.

Zones of Regulation

Regulating One's Own Behavior and Emotions

A curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities.

It is designed to help students recognize when they are in different emotional states called "zones", with each of four zones represented by a different color.

Students also learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another. Students explore calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports so they will have a toolbox of methods to use to move between zones.

Sanford Harmony

Five Core Values

We implement the Sanford Harmony curriculum, which enhances our focus on diversity and inclusion, empathy, critical thinking, communication, and building strong peer relationships. Students engage in morning meet ups to check in with their peers while teachers are able to assess the emotional forecast for the day of his/her class. Students learn about and are rewarded for making good choices and exemplifying our five core values: kindness, respect, empathy, problem-solving and teamwork. These values are reinforced through our carefully curated Book of the Month Series where the theme of each selection refers to one of our seven core values.

PBIS
(Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports)

You Tend to Find What You're Looking For

The purpose of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at P.S. 145 The Bloomingdale School is to improve current behaviors to support academic success and provide a climate with unified goals and expectations for all. As we work together to teach, model, and reward positive student behaviors, then our students will be respectful, responsible, and kind members of society. At P.S. 145 students are expected to meet the following expectations across various school settings. Students will be rewarded for meeting expectations aligned to our harmony core values, which are kindness, respect, empathy, problem solving and teamwork.

School Store

You Get What You Give

Our students earn honeypots throughout the week and are able to shop in our school store for student-selected items! They can rack up on small prizes or save their honeypots up for bigger ticket items.  Students learn in a fun way, the more positive energy you put out in the world, the more benefits and rewards you reap! Teachers get into the spirit too and are also rewarded when they are overheard recognizing core values in action and articulating the desired behavior to our students! As you can see it's all hearts on deck to make school a kinder space!

Monthly Assemblies

It's Dale Time!

To celebrate our students' achievements, we hold monthly PBIS assemblies where we recognize those who consistently make positive choices and those who show significant improvement. Our school mascot Dale also makes special appearances at these assemblies and other events, adding an extra layer of excitement as we celebrate our students' successes.

Monthly Excursions

Where in the World is PS 145?!?!

At P.S. 145, we take pride in recognizing and rewarding our students for their positive behavior through our PBIS program. Students who consistently demonstrate our core values and make good choices are selected as PBIS winners and earn the opportunity to participate in exciting, high-interest field trips. These special outings have included rock climbing at The Cliffs, ice-skating at Wollman Rink, and even lunch at iconic spots like Serendipity or fun-filled experiences at Dave & Buster’s. These trips not only serve as a reward for our students' hard work but also provide them with memorable experiences that reinforce the importance of making positive choices both in and out of school.
