Wellness in the Schools
PS 145 has partnered with Wellness in the Schools (WITS) to provide our students with nutrition and fitness education, healthy scratch-cooked meals, and an engaging learning experience that they can take home with them.
WITS Chefs lead WITS Labs, seasonal culinary and nutrition education classes for students in WITS schools. In the Labs, students prepare the simple, affordable, and healthy recipes that they will then experience at lunch. The sessions introduce students to the importance of healthy eating and seasonal ingredients, inspiring them to share their newly acquired knowledge with their families. Programs like these have been shown to positively influence children’s food preferences and behaviors, according to recent studies.
In 2019, PS 145 partnered with Brighter Bites, a nonprofit that delivers fresh fruits and vegetables directly into our families’ hands.
Every week, Brighter Bites distributes fresh, seasonal produce for families and teacher to pick up and take home. Two bags contain approximately 50 servings of fruits and vegetables, weighing 20-25 pounds.
At school and during distributions, students learn how to make the most of their produce. Teachers utilize their bags during in-class lessons using evidence-based programs that promote healthy food choices and physical activity.
